Noorani Qaida: a simple guide for parents

What Noorani Qaida is, what children learn in it, how long it takes and how parents can support practice at home.

If your child is about to start learning to read the Qur'an, you will almost certainly hear the words Noorani Qaida. It is the standard first book, and for good reason.

What is Noorani Qaida?

Noorani Qaida is a short, graded course that teaches children (and adults) to read Arabic as it appears in the Qur'an. It moves from single letters, to letters with vowels, to joined letters and finally to the basic rules of recitation.

What does your child learn?

  • The 29 Arabic letters and their exact sounds
  • Short vowels (fatha, kasra, damma) and long vowels
  • Tanween, sukoon and shaddah
  • How letters change shape when joined
  • Introductory rules such as madd and noon sakinah

How long does it take?

It depends on age, attention and how regularly the child practises. Many children complete it in several months with five lessons a week. Rushing is a mistake: a child who masters Qaida reads the Qur'an more accurately for life.

How parents can help at home

  • Keep a fixed daily slot of 10 to 15 minutes
  • Ask your child to teach you what they learned today
  • Praise effort and improvement, never just perfection
  • Sit in on the first lessons to understand the tutor's method

Why one-to-one lessons suit Qaida

At this stage, tiny pronunciation differences matter. A live one-to-one tutor hears every letter and corrects it at once. Group classes cannot offer that attention.
