How to learn the Qur'an online: a beginner's roadmap

A clear, step-by-step roadmap for learning the Qur'an online: from the Arabic letters and Noorani Qaida to fluent recitation, Tajweed and understanding the meaning.

Learning the Qur'an online works very well, as long as the lessons are live and one-to-one. The tutor must be able to hear you, correct you and adjust to you in real time. This roadmap shows the order most students follow, and why the order matters.

Step 1: Learn the letters and their sounds

Everything begins with the Arabic alphabet. Noorani Qaida teaches each letter, its correct point of articulation (makharij), the short and long vowels and the rules for joining letters. A few months of steady Qaida practice saves years of correcting bad habits later.

Step 2: Read the Qur'an fluently (Nazra)

Once the foundation is secure, you start reading the Qur'an itself. At this stage a live tutor corrects your reading as you recite. Fluency comes from repetition with correction, not from repetition alone.

Step 3: Add Tajweed

Tajweed refines your recitation: the rules of noon sakinah, meem sakinah, madd and more. The best way to learn them is on the verses you are already reading, so each rule is heard and applied the same week.

Step 4: Memorise and revise (optional)

Students who want to memorise move into Hifz, using a daily cycle of a new lesson, a recent review and an old review. Revision is what makes memorisation last.

Step 5: Understand what you recite

Tarjuma and Tafseer give meaning to the words. Even a few minutes of word-by-word translation each week changes how you feel in prayer.

What you need to begin

  • A phone, tablet or computer with a camera and microphone
  • A stable internet connection
  • A quiet place and a regular time each day
  • A qualified live tutor, which is why a trial matters

At QQuranic you can try this roadmap with a 3-day free trial. Your tutor will assess your level on the first day and suggest where to begin.
